At the weekend West Wight competed in Waterlooville in the first round of the Arena League Team Gala with 30 swimmers and half as many supporters who nearly filled the coach to maximum capacity. Swimmers achieved an impressive 18 new personal best times and placed first in eleven races. Both the Girls and Boys 13 Under won their relays with girls Megan Rice, Molly Fennimore, Lucy Miller and Annabel Fletcher and boys, Ben Curliss, Louis Herbert, Leo Popov and Joe Franks. The boys 15 Under relay obliterated the competition wining both relays by nearly ten seconds with Charlie Fennimore, Jake Williams , Luke Herbert and Joe Franks(swimming up). Joe, Luke, Jake and Louis won their individual event and so did Grace Poynter and Sam Tinson-Wood. Matt Barber and Lucy Miller placed second in the 100m breaststroke and Rhys Hunt, who travelled from Chichester University to support his island club, placed 2nd in 100m fly. Megan Rice and Benji Curliss were 3rd in 100m free. Racing in two relays and two individuals Abbie Piper achieved PBs in all her races. In the younger girls and boys 9-11 year age group were Jessica Browne, Caitlin Townsend, Amelie Berry, Lucy Issacson, Evelyn Fletcher, Harry Poynter, Dominic Batchelor, James Morgan and Bobby Minns, most of which competed for the first time on the mainland. Other swimmers on the team who contributed to a exciting and successful evening included; Katie Taylor, Kerry Miller, Victoria Watts, Bethany Jerram, Annalise Jerram and Rio Baker.
